העדות המלאה [25 July 1941] SS and Ukrainian militia caught 98 Jewish men and boys. Then, two people were released [...] Next day, in the morning, [...] he saw a limo with Gestapo men driving by and then 3 trucks covered with sheets. The sheets were moving so it was easy to guess that underneath them were people. The trucks were going towards Kopychyntsi. In the evening, this column of cars, a limo and 3 trucks, came back. The Ukrainian militia men were standing on the trucks with spades and shovels covered in dirt. During the next days, Jews from Chortkiv were asking other Jews from the neighbourhood, who came to the town if they had seen something and they were saying they had heard a shooting in Basiówka i.e. a forest near Chortkiv, on the way to Kopychyntsi. They had also seen there a huge, freshly dug grave. The grave in Basiówka was opened in the summer of 1944 by the Red Army. It was concluded that 96 victims were buried there on one side, some bodies were found standing and without any gunshot wounds, which means they were buried alive. 56 Poles were buried on the other side of the grave and according to their families' testimonies they were killed on the same day. The grave was divided.
